Break Time

The Deadline Monster strikes again!

Apologies, but MSTF will be on break this week. With several freelance deadlines and a conference coming up at the end of the week, I’m just spread too thin. Work must get done. Blech.

The good news is, after this week I am dedicating some time to getting my buffer of pages up again so I don’t have so many delays.

As always, please use the break time to catch up on missed pages, comment, or share the comic. Also check out some of my buddy webcomickers in the links if you need to fill the comic void in my absence.

Thanks for the support!

MSTF Makes the Detroit News!

by Dani Jones on August 16, 2012 at 9:33 am
Posted In: Blog

This post is long overdue because this article came out weeks ago. However, late is better than never, and this is too good not to share!

My Sister the Freak was mentioned on the Detroit News Geek Watch blog, along with one of my other comics Frosty the Gourdman. Both received favorable reviews and compliments.

Here’s an excerpt:

I loved the playful, cartoonish art, which really seemed to fit the characters. And I love the coloring technique. I don’t know if Jones pulls it off on paper or in Photoshop, but the roughed-in style and subtle use of pattern really make this a stand-out book visually.

Of course, pretty pictures wouldn’t be worth anything without a good story, and “My Sister, the Freak” has one. Allison and Mary seem like perfectly normal siblings. Little sister Mary has a wild, imaginative streak, and Allison shows your typical teenage resentment when she’s forced to babysit. But when aliens come calling, it turns out one of the sisters is not who she appears to be.

So with great art, great characters and an adorable cat named Captain Bacon, you can’t go wrong.

Thanks so much Eric! For the record, MSTF is indeed created in Photoshop.

Here’s the full article, which reviews some other fantastic comics as well: http://blogs.detroitnews.com/geekwatch/2012/08/02/more-great-reads-from-kids-read-comics/

My bud Chris Oatley has created a nifty digital painting tutorial featuring some MSTF fan art he made for me. (Actually, this is the SECOND tutorial – the first one is here.)

If you haven’t seen the painting this is based on, you can see it here. It is also part of the guest art section in MSTF Volume 1.

If you are unfamiliar with Chris’s tutorials, articles, and general presence on the web, you are MISSING OUT. Chris is one of the most helpful, knowledgeable, and skilled artists I know. You should check out and subscribe to his website right now.

I found this random screencap on my computer that I forgot I recorded. This is me inking a page of Captain Bacon. It was done in Adobe Illustrator. Enjoy!
