Here’s a peek at how the Chapter 1 cover is coming along. Painted the background and added some texture…

I found this random screencap on my computer that I forgot I recorded. This is me inking a page of Captain Bacon. It was done in Adobe Illustrator. Enjoy!
Here is a snippet of one of the pages showing a little bit of my coloring process.

I’m fully involved in coloring now. Here’s a snapshot of the cintiq. This is one of the early panels, and an early peek at the young version of Al!
Start reading Volume 2 today! Well, not in comic form, but here is the first page of my written script.
In my process, I type the story out, kinda like a screenplay. I have visual moments and cues in mind, and I’ll sketch things on the side here and there, but typing it out helps me to keep the story together in my head. A finished script is also a good thing to have on hand for pitching to publishers, so I like to write it out this way.
A few things to notice from this script sample:
1. The title! My Sister the Freak Volume 2: Sisters Vs. Aliens. I think this might change by the time I print the book because I am going to have a book published later this year called Monsters Vs. Kittens – I’m not sure I want two project titles both riffing off of the “Vs.” theme. I might steal the “Part 1″ title and use it for the whole book because it actually fits pretty well. Sister, Alien, Pirate, Spy. Intrigued?
2. First scene! It’s a flashback. In a hospital.
3. You will see more of the Seaver parents in the next volume.
4. You can also see my handwritten annotations in red. This is me figuring out where the page breaks are going to be.
Here is some more character art for Al, Mary, and Captain Bacon. I’m trying to streamline my process behind the scenes so that the making of the comic goes a lot quicker. In the first book, I decided not to “ink” my pages, but used a clean pencil line. I drew each page traditionally on bristol, then scanned, stitched, and cleaned up each one before coloring. Now, I plan on going completely digital. These drawings are a test of my digital process. I think they came out well and do a good job at resembling my pencil process.
I’ve been working on streamlining the design of my characters so I can start fresh for the next book. It won’t be a total change-up, but I’m trying to simplify some shapes, bring more consistency to the style, and fix some things that were bugging me.
Here’s more of the two Seaver sisters:
This is the rough pencils for a panel on one of the early pages in the next chapter. As you can see, Captain Bacon is ready and rearing for the next adventure!
And of course, there is going to be some alien action in the next book as well (it won’t *all* be about kittens). This is a concept sketch for one of the new characters. He may evolve as I further develop him, but I liked how this sketch turned out.

Here’s a time-lapse of the creation of the Volume 1 cover illustration, from sketch to finish. Enjoy!
I broadcasted on Ustream last week. It was tons of fun! It was nice to be back and chatting with friends again. I will be broadcasting again this week – Wednesday June 8 at 12 noon ET and Friday June 10 at 10 AM ET. I’ll be making some more comic pages. Stop by, chat, and ask questions. You can watch at http://danidraws.com/danidrawslive. Hope to see you there!
Here are the full videos from the two broadcasts. The first is sketching and drawing the line art of a comic page, and the second is me coloring it in Photoshop.
Here’s a little more progress on the cover for Issue 3 – the final color study, plus a few other options that I made:
Now I’ve just got to paint it up! Issue 3 should be available very soon. :)
You may notice that today’s page is missing a little something…
Yep, I didn’t have time to color the page this week. In between an especially large load of freelance work and the launch of The Illustrated Section, I have not had enough time for the comic. However, I made sure to get a new installment out in the form of the line drawing.
Not to worry – I will have the colors done very soon. In the meantime, here’s a great opportunity to see some behind-the-scenes process! (way to be positive, right?)
UPDATE: The finished page is up! Go check it out.

I just posted an article over on my main blog about my writing process. I’m still pretty new to this comics thing (and writing in general for that matter), but I hope it gives you some insight into the way I work and makes for an educational read.
As part of the blog post, I have posted a portion of the MStF script. If you’re interested in seeing it, you can download it here.

Last week, I shared a few inking and coloring tests I made during early development of My Sister, the Freak.
Here’s another test panel that was finished using similar methods that I’m using for the pages today. I ultimately decided on using pencil for my lines and Photoshop for my colors.
The drawing is roughed out in red pencil first.

I scan the drawing. Then I use Photoshop to take out the red and clean up the line.

Then I color it in Photoshop.

My Sister, the Freak is the first comic I have ever made. Back when I was first developing it, I experimented with different media and coloring methods in order to figure out how I wanted to create the rest of the story.
I inked a few sketches using brush and ink, pen and ink, and pencil.

I also created a few test comics to see what full panels would look like together.

I previously posted a video of me pencilling the first page of Chapter 1. Here is another video of me coloring that same page.
All of the coloring is done in Photoshop.

Here’s a short time-lapse video of me pencilling the first page of Chapter 1.
I rough out the drawing with a red pencil, then clean up the line with a regular pencil. I take out the red lines in Photoshop and color from there.

Want to know how I color My Sister, the Freak pages? Watch me paint one of the illustrations in the videos below.
These videos are from my Ustream show. I draw and paint live every Tues-Fri morning at 10 AM ET. During the broadcast, I chat with viewers and answer questions right on the spot. I will be dedicating future shows to working on MStF pages and concept art. Stop by and chat sometime.
