Chapter 1 Cover Sketch and Schedule Note
by Dani Jones on November 5, 2012 at 1:44 pmHi all. There’s gonna be a slight break between Chapters 1 and 2. HOWEVER, to hold you over until then, I am going to post my process for this image throughout the week. It will be the cover image for Chapter 1, which I hope to release as a digital issue soon!
Chapter 2 will begin next week.
Here is another image of what I’m calling “the crew” – a group of new characters you will see in the next book. The second image is a variation of one of the characters, which I think I like better than the first sketch.
I’ve only got a photo of a scribbly sketch to show you for today’s sneak peek, but it’s an important one. This lineup features a whole new group of characters that will appear in the next book.
Here is some more character art for Al, Mary, and Captain Bacon. I’m trying to streamline my process behind the scenes so that the making of the comic goes a lot quicker. In the first book, I decided not to “ink” my pages, but used a clean pencil line. I drew each page traditionally on bristol, then scanned, stitched, and cleaned up each one before coloring. Now, I plan on going completely digital. These drawings are a test of my digital process. I think they came out well and do a good job at resembling my pencil process.
I’ve been working on streamlining the design of my characters so I can start fresh for the next book. It won’t be a total change-up, but I’m trying to simplify some shapes, bring more consistency to the style, and fix some things that were bugging me.
Here’s more of the two Seaver sisters:
This is the rough pencils for a panel on one of the early pages in the next chapter. As you can see, Captain Bacon is ready and rearing for the next adventure!
And of course, there is going to be some alien action in the next book as well (it won’t *all* be about kittens). This is a concept sketch for one of the new characters. He may evolve as I further develop him, but I liked how this sketch turned out.
I have been making a bunch of these 5″x7″ watercolor sketches of MSTF characters for those who preordered the Volume 1 book. It’s been fun making them!
All of you who didn’t catch the preorder can now also have a full color original watercolor sketch. I’m making them available for purchase here.

They are 5″x7″, rendered with ink and watercolor on bristol paper. It features a headshot of one MSTF character of your choice.
This is the sketch for the Issue 3 cover. In this chapter, there was a lot about Al and her origins and struggles at school, so I decided to focus on her.
I also made this sketch, to see what it would look like if I included Mary a little too:
But I kinda like the boldness and simplicity of the first idea.
UP! Fair Auction Featuring Original MStF Art
by Dani Jones on December 8, 2010 at 1:26 pmThe UP! Fair is auctioning off a couple pieces of original art from me to help raise money for future fairs. Please consider bidding to help support independent creators everywhere.
If you’re not familiar with the UP! Fair, it is a convention/conference for independently created stories, art, comics, and more. It features workshops, booksales, and demonstrations for creators and fans of all ages and skill levels. Best of all, it’s free to the public. I am a big fan of what these guys are doing, and hope you MStF fans can support them too.
Here’s the art that is being auctioned. I’m a little late in posting this, so there is only a couple days left to bid. Go quickly if you want one of these pieces. They are both original paintings – the first is gouache and the other is ink and watercolor. Each of them comes packaged with a copy of MStF Issue 1.
And there’s a lot of other art being auctioned off too. Go here to see them all.

This is a commission I just finished. The customer requested a painting of the MStF characters in Hawaii. How fun! Aloha!
If you are interested in a commission of your own, go here for more info: http://store.danidraws.com/commissions
Here’s a look at some color and design studies for some of the aliens in the story.
I have also created a new Concept Art page in the Extras section. I will use the page to post sketches, designs, and behind-the-scenes images from the comic.
